Phato Night Stay India's First Tree House Inside a Tiger Reserve

Sleep in a tree house built into the Tarai West forest canopy — Corbett's largest and newest safari zone, with some of the highest tiger densities in the park.

WHY PHATO

Corbett's Newest Zone, and Its First Tree House

Inaugurated in January 2022, Phato is the youngest of Corbett's safari zones and, at over 2,500 hectares, also the largest by area. It sits in the Tarai West Forest Division, entered through Mohan Nagar Gujar Jhala near Maldhan — a stretch of dense, largely untouched forest that most visitors to Dhikala or Bijrani never see.

What sets a Phato night stay apart is simple: it's home to Corbett's first-ever tree house. Raised into the forest canopy, away from the ground-level rest houses found elsewhere in the park, it puts you at eye level with the jungle rather than beside it — with human-made water reservoirs nearby drawing tiger, elephant and deer into view.

A NIGHT AT PHATO

How the Evening Unfolds

From afternoon entry through Mohan Nagar Gujar Jhala to a first-light safari the next morning — a night inside Corbett's newest zone.

2:30 PM

Entry Through Mohan Nagar Gujar Jhala

Your jeep enters the Phato zone about 23km from Ramnagar, cutting through dense Tarai forest that feels noticeably wilder than the more-visited zones.

4:30 PM

Afternoon Safari

Being the largest zone in the park, Phato allows a longer, less crowded drive — with reservoirs that regularly draw tiger, elephant and deer.

7:00 PM

Dinner at the Forest Canteen

A simple meal at the on-site canteen before settling into your tree house or rest house room for the night.

9:00 PM

Night in the Canopy

Raised above ground level, the tree house puts you closer to the forest sounds than any ground-floor rest house — insects, alarm calls, and the occasional distant roar.

6:30 AM

Morning Safari

An early drive through a zone that sees far fewer vehicles than Dhikala or Bijrani, with reservoirs still quiet from the night before.

What Our Guests Say

Sleeping in the tree house felt completely different from any other Corbett stay — you're up in the canopy, not on the ground floor of a rest house.

Barely any other vehicles on our afternoon safari — being the newest zone, Phato still feels wonderfully uncrowded.

The booking process took a bit of coordination since it's not fully online yet, but the team handled it and the stay itself was unforgettable.

Good to Know Before You Book

Being Corbett's newest zone, Phato's tree house and FRH bookings are currently processed offline through the forest office rather than the standard online portal. We coordinate this directly with the department, so you don't have to handle the paperwork yourself.
Each tree house has 2 rooms and comfortably sleeps 5-6 guests. There are currently 5 tree houses at Phato, so total overnight capacity across all of them is around 30 guests.
The Phato entry gate at Mohan Nagar Gujar Jhala, Maldhan, is around 23km from Ramnagar. It's a separate entry point from the more commonly used Dhangarhi and Amdanda gates.
Being the largest safari zone in Corbett with dense forest and human-made water reservoirs that draw wildlife, Phato has quickly built a reputation for strong tiger, elephant and deer sightings — though as with any wild park, no sighting can ever be guaranteed.
